Joan Laporta victory casts doubt on Marcus Rashford transfer

Barcelona president Joan Laporta’s re-election has thrown fresh uncertainty over Marcus Rashford’s future, with the newly confirmed chief suggesting the Catalan club may delay activating the £25 million (€30 million) buy clause in the forward’s season-long loan.

Rashford, 26, has spent the 2023-24 campaign at the Camp Nou after Manchester United sanctioned the temporary switch last summer. In 38 appearances across all competitions he has contributed 10 goals and 15 assists, performances that initially convinced Barcelona insiders the option-to-buy would be triggered this June.

Speaking after securing a fresh mandate at the club’s presidential poll, however, Laporta indicated that alternative structures are now under consideration.

“We could extend the loan further,” he told reporters. “It depends on what Deco wants. There are formulas, such as paying part of the buy option to Manchester United and figuring out the rest later.”

The remarks mark a notable shift in tone and have reignited doubts over whether Barcelona can afford to meet the pre-agreed fee. The club’s well-documented financial constraints continue to shape recruitment strategy, even as Laporta praised Rashford’s influence on and off the pitch.

“Marcus has provided good numbers in goals and statistics, great chemistry in the locker room, and he is very involved with the Foundation,” Laporta added.

Manchester United, for their part, are understood to prefer a swift resolution. Senior figures at Old Trafford are reluctant to renegotiate the existing terms and would rather secure a permanent sale than sanction another temporary arrangement.

With Laporta’s electoral win now ratified, the trajectory of negotiations is expected to crystallise in the coming weeks. Until then, Rashford’s long-term home remains in limbo, caught between Barcelona’s fiscal realities and United’s desire for clarity.
