J.J. McCarthy Gets His Marching Orders

Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy has been handed a clear directive: improve or risk losing the starting job. Ten games into his NFL career, the No. 10 overall pick in the 2024 draft has yet to deliver on the promise that accompanied his arrival in Minneapolis, prompting head coach Kevin O’Connell to engineer a more competitive quarterback room for the 2026 season.

Speaking recently on a team-produced program with Paul Allen and Pete Bercich, O’Connell acknowledged that McCarthy’s rookie campaign “hasn’t gone as anyone hoped,” while insisting the 23-year-old remains a central part of the franchise’s long-term plans. To accelerate his development, the Vikings intend to bring in at least one, and possibly two, veteran passers to create what the coach called “a really competitive situation that I think our whole team will benefit from.”

McCarthy is currently in California working with private coach John Beck, the same mentor who helped him prepare for the draft. The goal, according to O’Connell, is to “decompress after the season and go through layer by layer: ‘What do I need to individually work on to make sure I come back ready to roll in April?’” Specific emphasis is being placed on refining mechanics and expanding his repertoire beyond what one evaluator likened to “a nice four-seam fastball,” a reference to the quarterback’s tendency to rely on velocity over touch.

Although injuries contributed to McCarthy’s uneven first season, the organization believes an open competition will guard against complacency. “We’ve really got to push the gas pedal down,” O’Connell said, stressing that added pressure is viewed as a developmental tool rather than a vote of no-confidence. “We still believe in you and want you to be our long-term passer. Accept the challenge for what it is as you elevate.”

Vice president of football operations Rob Brzezinski echoed the coach’s sentiment, noting that McCarthy’s intelligence and work ethic give him a strong foundation. “His continued growth in our offense and schemes will be a natural thing,” Brzezinski said. “He’s a really smart player. I think he’s going to be able to use a lot of that experience … to get himself in position to have the best 2026 he can.”

For now, McCarthy’s offseason curriculum consists of strength training, mechanical tweaks, and on-field sessions designed to improve accuracy and ball placement. When he reports for organized team activities, he will find a quarterback room configured to push him to the forefront—or expose him if he fails to respond. The Vikings see that potential discomfort as the next logical step in transforming a talented but unpolished signal-caller into the franchise quarterback they envisioned on draft night.
