IPL pull grows: PSL commentator named in IPL commentary panel, may exit midway

Karachi, March – The Pakistan Super League’s muted 2024 curtain-raiser at a spectator-free Gaddafi Stadium has been overshadowed by an accelerating exodus of talent toward the Indian Premier League, with broadcaster Star Sports now luring a key voice from the PSL commentary box.

Former England opener Nick Knight, confirmed only days ago as part of the PSL’s English-language team, has been added to Star Sports’ IPL roster for the upcoming season. While the network announced Knight’s appointment on Friday, it offered no timeline for when he will leave the PSL booth, raising the prospect of a mid-tournament departure that would further thin the tournament’s on-air presence.

Knight’s potential exit mirrors the player drain already vexing the Pakistan Cricket Board. PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi told reporters that “two to three players” have exited the PSL early and that the board is “planning to take legal action on them.” Among the departures, Zimbabwe quick Blessing Muzarabani has been signed by Kolkata Knight Riders as a replacement for Bangladesh’s Mustafizur Rahman, only weeks after joining Islamabad United as cover for injured West Indies paceman Shamar Joseph. Sri Lanka skipper Dasun Shanaka is poised to abandon Lahore Qalandars for Rajasthan Royals, stepping in for the injured Sam Curran, while Australian left-armer Spencer Johnson has left Quetta Gladiators’ 2026 plans in limbo to join Chennai Super Kings in place of Nathan Ellis.

With fuel-saving measures keeping fans outside the turnstiles and the PSL’s opening ceremony cancelled, the tournament now faces the added challenge of retaining both players and on-air talent as the IPL’s financial magnetism intensifies.
