‘I need your help with that’ – Arteta on the noise around Max Dowman

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has urged the media and supporters to temper the growing excitement surrounding 16-year-old Max Dowman, insisting that collective restraint is vital to safeguard the teenager’s development.

Dowman etched his name into Premier League history on Saturday, becoming the competition’s youngest-ever goalscorer when he curled home Arsenal’s second in a composed 2-0 victory over Everton. The strike came on only his third league appearance of the campaign after a recent return from an ankle injury.

Addressing the inevitable surge of attention, Arteta issued a direct plea: “I need your help with that, guys. Because if we’re saying that and I have 15 questions on Max, it doesn’t really help. So if we just bring the temperature down and understand what is the best thing for this boy at his age. He’s doing something phenomenal, we all know that. Let’s keep it down a little bit and respect his nature to do what he has to do, which I’m sure is going to be something really good.”

While Arteta confessed the audacity of the finish exceeded his expectations, he insisted the midfielder’s fearlessness and decision-making justified the selection. “Well, I didn’t expect that kind of goal, that’s for sure,” he admitted. “But his attitude and his decision making, yes. If not, I wouldn’t have made a decision to play him. But then to be that precise and deliver the moment that he delivered, that’s obviously something difficult to imagine.”

The Spaniard believes Dowman’s uninhibited approach is already influencing senior professionals. “That’s a good point,” he reflected. “I think it’s very inspiring when you see someone, almost naive, making decisions and flowing and careless playing in that manner, in that context. It’s great. I think probably our players realised as well, it’s a good example. Playing with that flow and enthusiasm is actually very beneficial for the team.”

As Arsenal prepare for the season’s final stretch, Arteta’s message is clear: history may have been made, but the priority is protecting the precocious talent who authored it.
