Holger Rune Issues Latest Injury Update and Reveals His New Goal

Four months after the Achilles tendon injury that curtailed his 2025 season, Holger Rune has offered a fresh glimpse into his rehabilitation and outlined the next benchmark he must hit before returning to full training.
The 21-year-old Dane damaged the upper portion of his right Achilles during a semifinal showdown with Ugo Humbert at the Stockholm Open, leaving the court in visible distress before undergoing surgery and shutting down his campaign. Since then Rune has documented each stage of his recovery on social media, and on Monday he posted a short video on X that showed him performing strength-building exercises for the affected leg.
“Testing leg strength,” Rune wrote alongside the clip. “Goal is to have almost equal strength at both legs before starting to jump and run to avoid unhealthy competitions. Happy to be back at Aspetar to make sure I progress safely. #comebackloading.”
The emphasis on symmetry underscores the cautious approach Rune and his medical team are adopting; only when the right limb matches the left for power output will he be cleared for the explosive movements required at tour level. While no official return date has been announced, the update suggests a late-season comeback remains the most likely scenario.
Before the injury Rune had re-established himself among the sport’s elite, reaching the Indian Wells final and capturing his fifth ATP title with a straight-sets defeat of Carlos Alcaraz in the Barcelona Open final. Those results propelled him to a career-high No. 8 in the rankings, but the subsequent lay-off saw him slide to 15th by the end of 2025 and, after missing the recent Australian Open, 16th in the latest list.
Rune forfeited 200 ranking points he had earned in Melbourne a year earlier by reaching the fourth round, amplifying the importance of a successful—and fully fit—return to competition later this year.
