Harry Brook Lauds Jacob Bethell's Tactical Century In T20 WC Semi

Mumbai, Wankhede Stadium – England captain Harry Brook hailed Jacob Bethell’s maiden T20 international hundred as a master-class in “cricket smarts” after the 21-year-old left-hander’s 48-ball 105 almost hauled the Three Lions past India’s towering 254 for seven in a pulsating ICC Men’s T20 World Cup semi-final. Despite falling seven runs short on 246 for seven, Bethell’s fearless knock – laced with eight fours and seven sixes – kept the defending champions on edge until the final over.
Addressing the media after the thriller, Brook said the innings was defined by meticulous match-up awareness rather than mere power-hitting. “We identified that Chakaravarthy’s miss is probably short, and Bethell put him away early on,” Brook explained, praising the youngster’s ability to force the mystery spinner into a fuller length and then loft him for six. “As every bowler does, he tried to go a bit fuller, and he hit him back over his head.”
The captain stressed that Bethell’s left-on-left advantage against India’s spinners was central to England’s late surge. “If you’re facing a left-arm spinner as a left-handed batter, that’s your match-up – you’ve got to try and take that over big,” Brook noted, adding that the rookie’s rapid assessment of India’s plans allowed the visitors to keep the required rate in check even after slipping to 95 for four.
Bethell found an able ally in Will Jacks, whose 20-ball 35 helped fashion a 77-run fifth-wicket stand that revived the chase. After Jacks departed, Bethell continued to clear the ropes before Jofra Archer’s blistering 19 off four balls took the contest to the last ball. In the end, a fortuitous yorker and a diving stop at extra-cover denied England what would have been the highest successful chase in T20 World Cup knockout history.
Earlier, India’s innings was fuelled by Sanju Samson’s unbeaten 89 off 42, complemented by explosive cameos from Shivam Dube (43), Ishan Kishan (39), Hardik Pandya (27) and Tilak Varma (21), propelling the hosts to a daunting total. Yet Brook insisted his side never felt out of contention, citing Bethell’s composure under fire as proof of England’s emerging depth.
“Yeah, it’s funny, because every time we get asked about spinners, you’re usually slagging us off,” Brook quipped. “So it’s nice to have a compliment about it for once.”
The seven-run defeat ends England’s campaign, but Bethell’s breakout century and Brook’s endorsement signal a bright future for a squad blending experience with fearless youth.
