Newcastle-upon-Tyne – Pep Guardiola declared Manchester City’s 3-1 FA Cup fifth-round victory over Newcastle United “the best performance we have played in this stadium” as the reigning champions booked a quarter-final berth and kept alive dreams of an unprecedented quadruple.
City, stung by a mid-week 2-2 Premier League draw with Nottingham Forest, fell behind inside the opening quarter-hour when Harvey Barnes punished a bright Magpies start. Yet the visitors responded emphatically: Savinho arrowed in an equaliser on the stroke of half-time before January recruit Omar Marmoush struck twice after the restart to seal a deserved win.
Guardiola, who prowled the technical area with trademark intensity, was shown a 54th-minute yellow card for dissent after protesting a perceived foul on Jeremy Doku. The caution, his sixth in domestic competition this term, triggers an automatic two-match touchline ban; the Catalan will watch from the stands when City host West Ham in the league and again for the FA Cup quarter-final. Crucially, he remains eligible for the Carabao Cup final against Arsenal in two weeks’ time.
Speaking to TNT Sports, the 55-year-old could not hide his delight.
“We played so good. The first 20 minutes always in this stadium are difficult – it always happens – but after we made sequences of passes, especially Savinho and Jeremy, it was so decisive. Incredible, the best performance we played in this stadium in our time together here, so it was really good!”
Guardiola reserved special praise for 20-year-old Savinho, whose solo effort shifted momentum before the interval.
“At that age, in the one-against-one, he is unstoppable. When we finish the final product, he will be a top, top class player.”
Marmoush, a £59 million arrival from Eintracht Frankfurt, continued his personal dominance of Newcastle; all three of his City goals have come against Eddie Howe’s side.
“I had a feeling that he scored a lot of times against them,” Guardiola smiled. “He’s a top striker and finishing – especially his second goal, our third – is his biggest quality. He made a fantastic game and deserved it. I’m so happy for him!”
The result means City have now eliminated Newcastle in three consecutive cup meetings this season, while extending their pursuit of four trophies into the spring. For Guardiola, Saturday night under the Tyne lights will linger long in the memory.
