Coventry, England — Frank Lampard saluted the blend of spirit and quality that carried Coventry City to a 2-1 stoppage-time victory over Stoke City on Saturday, a result that shattered a 21-year attendance record at the CBS Arena and kept the Sky Blues four points clear at the Championship summit.
A crowd of 31,516 — the largest since the club relocated to the stadium in August 2005 — watched Jack Rudoni rifle home the decisive goal deep into added time, sealing a fourth consecutive league win and capping a day of milestones for the league leaders.
Lampard, speaking to Coventry Live, insisted the outcome was a reward for sustained excellence rather than good fortune.
“Yeah, I think spirit was one thing, but quality was the other,” the manager said. “We were fantastic today, one of our best home performances from the first minute. We should have been two or three goals ahead at half-time for our play, but football sometimes kicks you where you don’t want it to.”
Coventry’s dominance was punctured just after the interval when Stoke converted their first corner of the afternoon, punishing a rare lapse from the hosts.
“From zero threat from them, I think they get a free kick in their own half, launch it in the box, get their first corner and score, and that’s obviously disheartening,” Lampard added. “But the performance in the first half was brilliant. There was no answer to what we were doing for them.”
With the score locked at 1-1 and anxiety rising inside the arena, Lampard praised his side’s composure.
“You just start to worry when the game goes on, and we play that well, and it’s one all, but yeah, you’re right, the character of the team to get it over the line in the end and get what we fully deserved was brilliant. So lots of great things from us today.”
Rudoni’s late strike ensured those qualities were rewarded, extending Coventry’s winning streak to four matches and reinforcing their promotion credentials with 11 fixtures remaining.
The record attendance underlined the growing belief among supporters that a return to the top flight is within reach, while Lampard’s squad continues to marry performance with resilience at the most critical stage of the campaign.
