Ex-Everton player reacts to Dowman breaking his record

Max Dowman’s record-breaking goal for Arsenal against Everton on Saturday has rewritten the Premier League history books, making the 16-year-old the competition’s youngest-ever goalscorer. What remained unknown until days later was that the man whose 19-year milestone he eclipsed, James Vaughan, was seated inside the Emirates Stadium to witness the moment first-hand.

Vaughan, who set the previous benchmark at 16 years and 271 days with a strike for Everton against Crystal Palace in April 2005, had travelled to north London to introduce his son to his first away-day experience. The coincidence was not lost on the former striker.

“We were in the stadium, and I had a feeling all day,” Vaughan revealed. “I’d known for a while, to be honest with you—if I’m truthful I know how good Max is. To be in the stadium, with my little boy watching, I think he was a little bit disappointed, but for me, I couldn’t think of a better player to break it.”

Vaughan has tracked Dowman’s rise through the youth ranks and urged caution amid the inevitable spotlight now fixed on the teenager.

“I’ve watched him for a few years now and one thing you don’t want to do is put too much pressure on him. His life’s going to change from this day forward, but he’s a special talent; I expect to see massive things for him in the future.”

The symmetry of Vaughan’s own journey adds a layer of poignancy. As an Everton academy prospect, he watched Wayne Rooney surpass the previous youngest-scorer mark against Arsenal in 2002, before claiming the record himself in claret and blue. Twenty years on, he sat among the away support as Dowman, wearing Arsenal red, reclaimed the accolade for the Gunners.

Far from harbouring resentment, Vaughan offered only encouragement, praising Dowman’s ability and expressing hope that the youngster can fulfil the potential already glowing around him.
