David Beckham Backs Michael Carrick for Permanent Manchester United Manager Role

David Beckham has thrown his full support behind Michael Carrick’s bid to become Manchester United’s next permanent manager, telling talkSPORT that the 44-year-old’s interim reign has delivered “exactly what we needed” after a decade of turbulence at Old Trafford.

Carrick, who stepped in for Ruben Amorim in January 2026, has guided United to third place in the Premier League with seven matches remaining, suffering only one defeat—a 2-1 loss at Newcastle—along the way. Champions League qualification is now within touching distance, and club great Beckham believes the former England midfielder has earned the right to take the job on a long-term basis.

“I’ve always liked Michael as a coach,” Beckham said. “There’s a calmness, an elegance in the way he is, whether it’s the way he celebrates or the way he gets angry. All of those things are important in a manager. The way he’s got the team together has been incredible.”

A top-four finish would guarantee a return to Europe’s elite competition and, in Beckham’s eyes, secure Carrick’s place in United folklore.
