Celta Vigo president pens letter to pop idol Madonna – “I am writing to you to ask for your help”

Vigo – While Celta Vigo continue to enjoy one of their best campaigns in recent memory on the pitch, club president Marián Mouriño has opened an off-field offensive aimed at recovering a unique piece of the club’s cultural history: the Celta jersey worn by global pop icon Madonna during her 29 July 1990 concert at Estadio de Balaídos.

The performance, part of Madonna’s Blond Ambition world tour, saw the singer take the stage in Celta’s unmistakable sky-blue colours. A photograph of the moment has since achieved near-mythical status among supporters and is woven into the Galician club’s collective memory.

After more than three decades of informal enquiries proved fruitless, Mouriño has taken the unprecedented step of publishing an open letter to Madonna on the club’s official social-media channels. In the letter, dated this week, the president appeals directly to the star for assistance in locating the garment.

“Dear Madonna,” the letter begins, “I am writing to you to ask for your help with something that means a great deal to us… The photograph of you wearing our shirt has become a myth and is now part of our history which is written often beyond the limits of the football pitch.”

Mouriño links Madonna’s boundary-pushing ethos with Celta’s own identity, noting: “Over time we came to better understand what you stood for back then: questioning established norms and standing up to those who try to tell you what you can or cannot do. At our club we recognise ourselves in this line of thought.”

The letter invites the singer – or anyone with information – to make contact before a high-profile moment this Friday, 6 March, when Celta host Real Madrid at 20:45 local time. A special gesture of “affection from our home, the Balaídos stadium” is planned ahead of kick-off, heightening anticipation that Madonna herself might respond, or even attend.

Whether the pop superstar or her representatives will reply remains uncertain, but Celta’s public plea has already captured headlines far beyond Galicia. Recovering the shirt would add another layer to a season already being celebrated by the sky-blue faithful.
