Bernardo Silva: City’s Growing Pains Could Define Title Race

Manchester City captain Bernardo Silva pulled no punches in diagnosing the 2-2 draw with Nottingham Forest, admitting the champions are still “learning on the job” at the sharp end of the season. Twice in front through first-half dominance, City were pegged back by stunning Morgan Gibbs-White and Elliot Anderson strikes, leaving Pep Guardiola’s men seven points adrift of Arsenal, albeit with a game in hand.
Silva, speaking exclusively to the Manchester Evening News’ Simon Bajkowski, labelled the dropped points “quite disappointing, especially at home,” but insisted the squad must pivot quickly with four competitions still alive. “We’re still in four competitions so there’s no point in looking back now and crying,” he said. “We need to go for the next game.”
The Portugal international stressed that youth, not talent, is the issue. “We have a young team and it takes time to learn these things or to experience these things,” he explained. “Winning helps a lot. So hopefully if we win this year it will take away the pressure that these games carry even more in the next seasons.”
Guardiola’s side monopolised 70 percent possession yet repeatedly recycled the ball rather than exploit gaps opened by their own high press. Forest, drilled by Vitor Perreira, retreated into a compact low block, denying City the killer instinct that once defined them. The hesitation to twist when the moment demanded it, Silva argued, is the final lesson this squad must master.
“It’s for sure a young team that we all together need to manage better these moments,” Silva concluded. Until that maturity arrives, City’s title destiny may rest on learning curves rather than outright supremacy.
