BCCI Announces Rs 7.5 Crore Prize for India’s Under-19 World Cup Champions
Mumbai, Saturday: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has earmarked a purse of Rs 7.5 crore for the India under-19 squad in recognition of their World Cup triumph in Harare, a reward announced barely 24 hours after the young side clinched the title.
India’s latest success at the Under-19 World Cup was fashioned by a breathtaking 175 off 80 balls from 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi, an innings that featured 15 sixes and 15 fours. Set up by Suryavanshi’s assault, captain Ayush Mhatre’s team piled up a tournament-record 411 for nine in their 50 overs before bowling England out for 311 in 40.2 overs to seal a commanding 100-run victory.
The win secures India’s sixth Under-19 World Cup crown and ends a two-year gap since the previous title in 2022 under Yash Dhull. On that occasion, each player received Rs 40 lakh and support-staff members Rs 25 lakh. The BCCI has also previously honoured its women’s Under-19 squads, handing out Rs 5 crore each after their World Cup wins in 2023 and 2025.
While the Indian board has moved swiftly to reward the youngsters, the players will not receive any prize money from the International Cricket Council. The ICC classifies the Under-19 World Cup as a developmental event rather than a commercial property, channelising resources through its global development programmes instead of offering prize money for tournament placings.
