Barcelona keeping tabs on soon-to-be-free Bundesliga attacking midfielder

Barcelona’s recruitment department is already mapping out summer targets, and the latest name to surface on their shortlist is Borussia Dortmund’s Julian Brandt, who will become a free agent on 30 June, according to Sky Germany’s Patrick Berger.

With the transfer window still months away, the Catalans have prioritised a new centre-back and centre-forward, plus the permanent acquisition of loanee Marcus Rashford. Yet the club’s hierarchy continue to monitor bargain opportunities, and Brandt’s contractual situation has put him firmly in their line of sight.

The 29-year-old Germany international, who joined Dortmund from Bayer Leverkusen in 2017, has amassed more than 300 appearances for the Black and Yellows and confirmed this month that he will not extend his seven-year stay. Brandt turned down two Premier League approaches in January, electing instead to fulfil his deal and assess all options on a free transfer this summer.

Barcelona and Arsenal have since registered their interest, while Serie A sides are also exploring a potential move. Brandt has backed up his reputation with productivity: 10 goals and nine assists in 32 matches across all competitions so far this campaign.

Despite the appeal of a no-fee signing, a switch to Camp Nou appears complicated. Coach Hansi Flick already has Fermín López and Dani Olmo operating as advanced playmakers, and the impending return of Gavi from injury further crowds the creative midfield positions. Unless the club sanctions departures or restructures its attacking rotation, minutes for Brandt would be scarce.

For now, Barcelona’s interest remains at the monitoring stage, leaving Brandt free to entertain a host of suitors as he prepares for the next chapter of his career.
