Andy Robertson’s contract expires at the end of the season.

Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson will leave the club on a free transfer when his deal expires in June, bringing the curtain down on a trophy-laden seven-and-a-half-year spell at Anfield.

The Scotland captain, signed from Hull City in the summer of 2017, has amassed nine major honours with the Reds, including two Premier League titles and the 2018-19 Champions League. Yet the 30-year-old has started only seven of 20 league appearances this season after being displaced by summer arrival Milos Kerkez, whom the club now view as their long-term solution at left-back.

January brought concrete interest from Tottenham Hotspur, who approached Liverpool hoping to secure Robertson’s experience for a relegation scrap. Talks collapsed after the Reds failed to line up a replacement, but sources confirm Robertson was receptive to the switch and remains open to a reunion with Spurs this summer. A verbal agreement is already in place, although any move is conditional on Tottenham retaining their top-flight status; with six matches remaining, Roberto De Zerbi’s side sit inside the drop zone.

Celtic and Atlético Madrid have also monitored the situation, with the Spanish club having come close to a deal last summer, yet Spurs currently lead the race for his signature.

“There was no contract on the table,” Robertson told reporters. “It was a conversation of, ‘OK, this is what I want to do, I want to play.’ I believe I’ve still got the ability.”

Robertson is eager to resolve his future before the World Cup and admits relegation would force him to reassess a move to north London. “I don’t want anything hanging over my head,” he added.

The departure of the former Hull defender follows Mohamed Salah’s decision to quit Merseyside, marking the end of an era for two pillars of Jürgen Klopp’s title-winning side.
