Andy Robertson Opens Up About Failed January Move To Spurs

Liverpool vice-captain Andy Robertson has confirmed for the first time that Tottenham Hotspur tried to prise him away from Anfield in January, revealing that formal discussions were held between the clubs before the defender personally intervened to kill the deal.
The 31-year-old left-back, whose contract expires in June, broke his silence after scoring the opening goal in Friday’s FA Cup fourth-round victory, a strike that kept Liverpool’s domestic cup hopes alive and underlined his enduring value to the squad. Speaking candidly about the winter-window saga, Robertson said negotiations had reached an advanced stage before he opted to remain on Merseyside.
“There was obviously interest there,” Robertson told reporters. “There were discussions had with both sets of clubs. But the decision was that I wanted to stay. We stayed at Liverpool and that was the decision made.”
The Scotland international stressed that his loyalty to the Reds has never wavered during his eight-and-a-half-year stint that has delivered two league titles and every major honour available. “I’ve been committed to Liverpool for the last eight and a half or nine years now and I’ll be committed until I’m no longer needed. This club has given me everything and I’ve given this club everything.”
With only three months remaining on his current deal, Robertson’s future remains uncertain. Manager Arne Slot has rotated at left-back this season, and the recent emergence of Milos Kerkez has intensified speculation that the club may be preparing for life without the fan favourite. Robertson, who turns 32 this week, insists any extension talks will be conducted away from the public gaze.
“I’ve always said that will stay between me and the club,” he said. “I don’t think it will get played out in public. I have got an amazing relationship with Richard [Hughes] and with Mike Gordon and Michael Edwards. Out of respect to them, and they have respected me, the conversations will be in-house. When a decision is made…it will be announced.”
Liverpool supporters have watched high-profile contract stand-offs involving other senior players unfold in recent seasons, but Robertson is determined to avoid a similar spectacle. “Whatever was happening behind the scenes happened, and all I can say is I kept focusing on football,” he added.
The loss of Robertson’s experience and infectious personality would leave a void in the dressing room, yet the clock is ticking on a potential ninth campaign at Anfield. Until an agreement is reached, the left-back says his sole priority is delivering on the pitch. “Now we move forward…my focus never came off trying to help the lads on the pitch and in training.”
Whether Liverpool’s hierarchy share Robertson’s desire for continuity remains to be seen, but Friday’s goal served as a timely reminder of the qualities they could sacrifice if negotiations collapse.
