14 Bouts Set for Military Night at 79th Annual Golden Gloves in Lowell

Lowell—With national berths on the horizon, 14 scheduled bouts will take center stage Thursday at the Lowell Memorial Auditorium as the 79th annual Golden Gloves moves into its penultimate week. First bell is slated for shortly after 7:30 p.m., and the evening will double as Military Night, honoring past and present members of the United States Armed Forces.

Lowell Sun Charities, the tournament organizer, will crown several Novice champions and narrow the Open division fields ahead of next Thursday’s finale, when the boxers who will represent Team New England at nationals will be decided.

The fight card spans 11 weight classes and features competitors from every corner of New England:

Bout 1 – 110-pound Open: Melvin Garcia (Lawrence, Intenze 978–CNE) vs. Jose Roman (Franklin, Manfredo’s Boxing–SNE)

Bout 2 – 121-pound Novice final: Josue Mercado (Haverhill, Haverhill Inner City Boxing–CNE) vs. Colin Peck (Berlin, Conn., KO King Boxing–WNE)
