Why Barcelona believe they have a shot at expensive Julian Alvarez move
Barcelona’s pursuit of Atlético Madrid forward Julián Álvarez has become one of the most persistent sub-plots of the season, and although the Spanish champions are acutely aware of their financial limitations, club officials believe a path to the Argentine international still exists.
Since the closing weeks of last campaign, Catalan media have linked the Blaugrana with the 24-year-old, who joined Atlético only last summer in a high-profile transfer from Manchester City. While Diego Simeone’s side have repeatedly classified Álvarez as “not for sale,” whispers that the player himself would entertain a fresh start have encouraged Barcelona to keep the story alive. On Friday, Simeone voiced frustration over repeated questions on the striker’s future, stopping short of guaranteeing Álvarez will remain at the Metropolitano beyond the next window.
Barcelona’s board has reportedly ring-fenced a ceiling of €100 million to secure a long-term successor to Robert Lewandowski, a figure that falls well short of Atlético’s likely valuation. Yet club negotiators see two reasons for optimism inside the capital club’s boardroom. First, chief executive Miguel Ángil Gil Marín remains personally committed to retaining Álvarez after championing last summer’s outlay, but sources tell Cadena SER that “powerful voices” elsewhere in the organisation would consider a lucrative offer if it allowed Atlético to strengthen multiple positions. Second, the arrival of new co-owner Apollo Sports Capital has injected spending confidence into the Madrid outfit, making them less desperate for cash and therefore more selective about any deal.
The biggest hurdle for Barcelona is competition, not principle. Arsenal have already registered firm interest, and Atlético would prefer to sell to the Premier League rather than reinforce a direct domestic rival. An English club could also outbid Barcelona’s constrained budget, leaving the Catalans hoping that personal preference and creative payment structures can bridge the gap.
For now, Barcelona continue to monitor every public utterance from Madrid, convinced that where there is hesitation, there is opportunity.
