We need leaders – Hansi Flick calls for Barcelona unity ahead of Levante clash

Barcelona, still smarting from back-to-back defeats to Atlético de Madrid and Girona, reconvened this week with Hansi Flick demanding that his squad confront its dip in form head-on. Speaking ahead of Sunday’s visit of Levante, the German coach said the mood swing after two poor results was impossible to miss, but believes a brief respite has already helped reset minds.
“After two defeats and not showing our best level, it was very good to have these two days off. I can see that the players are fresher,” Flick explained. “We play at home and we have to win the three points. We want to regain confidence.”
The coach conceded that doubt can creep in when performances drop, yet he praised the squad’s willingness to engage in frank discussion. “It is normal when you lose and don’t play well that doubts appear. We have been very honest,” he said. “Everyone is convinced about what we are doing.”
Central to Flick’s recovery plan is a push for on-field leadership. Recent team meetings have been less monologue, more dialogue. “I don’t just explain things, I ask questions. That’s how I work and manage the team. We need leaders. It’s important that they have a voice. I want them to take responsibility for the situation and I think they are doing that.”
Perspective remains important: under Flick, Barça have won four of five possible trophies at some stage, including this season’s Supercopa de España, and remain alive in the major competitions despite the recent slip.
Injuries are finally tilting in Barcelona’s favour. Marcus Rashford has rejoined full training, Pedri is back in contention and could feature against Levante, while Gavi continues a carefully managed return. “Step by step,” Flick said of the young midfielder, before highlighting Pedri’s unique influence: “He is a very important player for us. He is a different kind of leader because of his quality. He can be one of those leaders in the future of this club.”
Off the pitch, presidential elections are looming, but Flick refused to be drawn into the political fray. “That decision has been taken. It is not my job to make any comment and I don’t think it affects the team.”
With Levante next up at Montjuïc, Flick’s message is clear: unity, leadership and a swift return to winning ways are non-negotiable if Barcelona are to keep their broader ambitions intact.
