We lost it on moments – Skinner laments United’s flaws in Women’s League Cup final defeat
Bristol, Sunday – Manchester United head coach Marc Skinner left Ashton Gate convinced that his team had not been outplayed by Chelsea in the Women’s League Cup final, insisting instead that “moments” of hesitation and individual errors cost the Reds a first-ever triumph in the competition.
A 2-0 defeat, sealed by Lauren James’ first-half strike and Agnes Beever-Jones’ late second, delivered the trophy to the defending champions and left United reflecting on a second consecutive domestic final loss to the Londoners after last season’s 2-1 FA Cup heart-breaker.
Skinner, whose side kept the contest tight until James punished a loose touch from centre-back Dominique Janssen, refused to accept that Chelsea had dominated proceedings.
“I don’t think they’ve beaten us today,” he said. “In terms of the result they’ve beaten us, but I don’t think they outplayed us by any means. We lost it on moments, just like last year’s FA Cup final – a penalty before half-time, a free-kick, a counter. The margins are tiny.”
The United manager praised his players’ courage in building through the thirds but questioned their defensive aggression, particularly towards James, who spent two years in United colours before joining Chelsea.
“We gave her a little bit too much respect,” Skinner admitted. “You have to risk she might beat you if you’re going to go toe-to-toe. We got the balance between caution and aggression wrong.”
Opportunity knocked again when Nathalie Bjorn’s injury forced Chelsea into a reshuffled back four, yet United failed to apply sustained pressure. Within minutes Beever-Jones capitalised on a second lapse to double the lead.
“Poor again – a poor goal from us as a collective,” Skinner said. “Against Chelsea we don’t produce the moments of clarity we need to score. It’s not blame; it’s clarity in the moment.”
Despite the setback, United remain in pole position to secure the sole English Champions League berth not occupied by runaway leaders Manchester City, and a maiden European campaign is still within reach. Skinner, under contract until June 2027 with an option for an additional year, challenged his squad to convert near-misses into silverware.
“We have to stop getting closer and just be there and above. That’s where we have to be in the next couple of seasons.”
