The Seattle Mariners hit seven doubles on their way to a win over Cleveland, 8-7
PEORIA, Ariz. – The Seattle Mariners cranked their way out of a mini-slump on Thursday afternoon, slugging seven doubles and riding the extra-base barrage to an 8-7 Cactus League victory over the Cleveland Guardians at Peoria Stadium. The win evened Seattle’s exhibition record at 3-3-1, while Cleveland slipped to 4-3 this spring.
Cal Raleigh paced the offense with a pair of doubles and his fourth RBI of the spring, part of a first-inning flurry that also included two-baggers from Julio Rodríguez and Randy Arozarena. Luis Suisbel, Luke Raley and Michael Arroyo added one apiece, giving the Mariners a franchise-record seven doubles in a single spring contest.
Rodríguez finished 1-for-3 with his third RBI, while 20-year-old infield prospect Colt Emerson continued to press for an Opening-Day roster spot, tripling and driving in his third run. Emerson, Seattle’s 2024 first-round pick, hit .285 with 16 homers, six triples and 14 steals across three minor-league levels last season and has looked poised in every Cactus League appearance.
Right-hander Bryce Miller earned the victory, working 1.1 scoreless innings with one strikeout. He was the first of nine Mariners pitchers to take the mound as manager Dan Wilson distributed innings throughout the staff.
Seattle’s front office has preached patience with its wave of top prospects, but Emerson, Arroyo, right-handers Kade Anderson and Ryan Sloan have made the decision increasingly difficult with each strong outing.
“We want them to push people out of the way,” general manager Justin Hollander said last fall. “When they tell us it’s their time, we won’t artificially block them.”
The Mariners will look to build on the offensive outburst when Cactus League play resumes this weekend. Opening Day is set for March 26 at T-Mobile Park.
