Roundup: Auburn boys swimming competes at NYS federation championships
Auburn’s varsity boys swimming and diving program represented Section III on the state stage this weekend, competing in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association federation championships Friday and Saturday at Ithaca College’s Athletics & Events Center.
The meet brings together the top public- and private-school programs from across the state, and Auburn’s contingent tested itself against that elite field after solid season-long performances that included a Jan. 28 dual-meet victory over JD/CBA in which sprinter Brayden Wilson touched first in the 50-yard freestyle.
Wilson, one of the team’s established speed specialists, also anchored the Maroons’ 200-yard freestyle relay during a Dec. 3 showdown with Liverpool at the YMCA-WEIU pool in Auburn, an earlier gauge of the squad’s relay depth.
While final state-championship placements were not available at press time, head coach Tim Smith’s group used the two-day event to measure progress and set the stage for future postseason runs.
