Report: Man Utd Considering Move for Former Man City Youngster
Manchester United are weighing up a summer approach for Borussia Dortmund midfielder Felix Nmecha, a player who spent 14 years in the Manchester City academy before carving out a new career in the Bundesliga, according to respected German journalist Christian Falk.
The 25-year-old, whose contract in Dortmund runs until 2028, has emerged as a surprise target for both Manchester giants as they map out midfield overhauls. United are bracing for the departure of Casemiro and could also move Manuel Ugarte on, leaving teenage star Kobbie Mainoo as the only natural central midfielder currently projected to remain at Old Trafford. A versatile, physically imposing option such as Nmecha is viewed internally as an ideal fit for the rebuild, whoever takes permanent charge of the dug-out next season.
City, meanwhile, have no immediate crisis in the engine room but recognise the need to refresh an ageing group. With Mateo Kovačić, Bernardo Silva and even Rodri facing uncertain futures, Pep Guardiola is open to adding a younger, dynamic presence. Nmecha’s familiarity inside the Etihad Campus may work in City’s favour, although some figures inside the club are thought to regret allowing the German international to leave on a free transfer in 2021.
Nmecha’s development since departing England has been striking. Originally an attacking midfielder or left-sided forward, he was converted into an all-action, box-to-box operator at Dortmund, excelling in a deeper pivot. The 6'3" German combines a rangy frame with the technical traits honed during his youth at City, and former Dortmund head coach Nuri Şahin lauded him as a “dream” for his tactical flexibility.
Affordability could prove decisive. With only two years remaining on his Dortmund deal, Nmecha is expected to command a far lower fee than other midfielders on the shared shortlists of both Manchester clubs. Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson is rated at £100 million, while Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton and Brighton’s Carlos Baleba also carry premium valuations and strong interest from rival Premier League sides.
Liverpool, Chelsea and Real Madrid are all anticipated to scour the market for midfield reinforcements, intensifying competition and inflating prices. United and City therefore continue to monitor multiple targets, but Nmecha’s Premier League readiness, positional versatility and attainable price tag make him an increasingly attractive proposition in what promises to be a fiercely contested summer scramble for central-midfield talent.
