Madrid, Spain – Real Madrid tightened the title race and warmed the hearts of their academy faithful on Saturday night, routing Elche 4-1 at the Bernabéu to move within a single point of La Liga leaders Barcelona. The comprehensive victory, the club’s third in eight days, was highlighted by a parade of home-grown talent and a stunning strike from Arda Güler that drew gasps around the ground.
Head coach Álvaro Arbeloa, himself a product of the club’s famed La Fábrica, could scarcely contain his pride after watching six academy graduates take the field. Thiago Pitarch was handed another start, while Daniel Yáñez, Gonzalo García, Diego Aguado, César Palacios and Manuel Ángel all entered as second-half substitutes.
“I think I can die peacefully after a night like today,” Arbeloa told Diario AS. “For someone who has been a home-grown player and has reached the first team after spending many years in the academy… to be able to give them the opportunity to play at the Bernabéu, it’s a dream come true for me.”
The 41-year-old coach revealed he first worked with Yáñez and Aguado when they were 13 or 14, making their senior debut under his watch a full-circle moment. “Added to Carvajal, a home-grown player par excellence, as well as Fran [García], Thiago, César, Gonzalo… it’s something indescribable. Very happy and proud. It’s not just putting them on, but how they played. I’ve taught them well, because they’ve shown a lot of talent, quality and personality.”
Beyond the emotional subplot, Madrid’s football did the talking. The hosts dominated an Elche side that demanded intensity, pressing high and disrupting rhythm. “This win has a lot of merit,” Arbeloa stressed. “They are a very uncomfortable opponent because of what they demand of you, because of how they play. The effort of our players has been enormous.”
The night’s signature moment arrived courtesy of Güler, who spotted the goalkeeper off his line and arrowed a shot from inside his own half into the net. “You have to bring a frame and put it in a painting,” Arbeloa said. “It is an unusual thing. Wonderful. It’s worth the ticket fee, or two or three, to see what he’s done.”
Attention now turns to the Champions League, where Madrid carry a 3-0 lead into the second-leg clash at Manchester City. Arbeloa expects a stern examination at the Etihad. “It’s going to be very complicated. They are going to take us to the limit and we will have to suffer. We have the experience of other years of knowing that when we are at our best, we can defeat anyone. We must give everything, be just as focused and go out to win the game because if not, we will suffer a lot.”
For one evening, however, suffering was replaced by celebration as La Fábrica’s next generation announced itself on the grandest stage of all.
