Manchester United Women will stage their UEFA Women’s Champions League quarter-final first leg against Bayern Munich at Old Trafford on Tuesday, 24 March, manager Marc Skinner has confirmed, giving the club its biggest European night on the most iconic stage in English football.
The tie will be played only days before United return to the same pitch for the women’s Manchester Derby the following weekend, turning the Theatre of Dreams into the epicentre of the domestic and continental game inside a single week.
United reached the last eight by sweeping Atlético Madrid aside 5-0 on aggregate, sealing progress with a 2-0 second-leg victory at Leigh Sports Village on Thursday night. The result propels the Reds into the Champions League proper for the first time in their history after they were eliminated by Paris Saint-Germain at the qualifying stage two seasons ago.
Bayern, currently top of the Frauen-Bundesliga, will arrive in Manchester for the opening instalment of the tie before welcoming United to the Allianz Arena for the return leg on Wednesday, 1 April.
Skinner’s side remain in contention on three cup fronts: they face Chelsea in the FA Women’s Cup this weekend and meet the same opponents in the League Cup final on 15 March, adding further weight to a pivotal month that could define the club’s season.
