‘New Pedri’ Kees Smit could rescind contract and join Barcelona

Amsterdam—The battle for Dutch prodigy Kees Smit has entered uncharted territory, with FC Barcelona and a clutch of Europe’s heavyweights monitoring a legal escape hatch that could land the 19-year-old for a token fee and leave AZ Alkmaar empty-handed.
AZ had hoped to trigger a club-record bonanza, but Studio Voetbal analyst Arno Vermeulen warns the club’s steep valuation—mooted anywhere between €40 million and €60 million—may prompt Smit to play his ultimate card: contract termination. Citing the recent European Court ruling in the Lassana Diarra case, Vermeulen argues that players now enjoy expanded worker protections. If negotiations stall, Smit could walk away for a few hundred thousand euros and sign for Barcelona, Manchester City or any other elite suitor without AZ receiving a premium.
The timing could hardly be more dramatic. Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman, who coached Pedri at Barcelona, has already likened Smit to the Spain midfielder, praising the teenager’s two-footed craft and vision. Yet the step-up remains a work in progress: thrust into Oranje’s starting lineup against Frenkie de Jong’s injury on 28 March, Smit completed only 75 percent of his passes in a subdued showing.
Regardless, demand is surging. AZ have enlisted super-agent Jorge Mendes to field calls from Europe’s boardrooms, determined to eclipse the €25 million sale of Tijjani Reijnders to AC Milan. Whether that figure is ever reached now hinges on a teenager’s willingness to test European labour law—and on Barcelona’s readiness to pounce.
