United entered the summer window conscious that their back line requires reinforcements. Persistent fitness problems for Matthijs de Ligt, Luke Shaw and Lisandro Martínez have eroded Erik ten Hag’s options, while the club’s hierarchy continues to weigh up Harry Maguire’s long-term role.
