McCullum set to continue as England head coach
Brendon McCullum is poised to remain at the helm of England’s men’s teams across all formats, defying speculation that a bruising winter could end his tenure.
The 44-year-old’s future had been the subject of intense debate after England surrendered the Ashes in dispiriting fashion and off-field distractions surfaced, but a narrow T20 World Cup semi-final exit to hosts India on Thursday has not derailed his determination to stay.
Speaking immediately after the tournament ended in Mumbai, McCullum told reporters: “I love the job. It’s a great job. It doesn’t come without its challenges, of course, but that is the nature of it. I feel we have achieved some really cool things over the last few years but there is still so much to achieve with the side, across all formats. I would love to carry on.”
Press Association understands that the England and Wales Cricket Board is inclined to grant that wish while it completes a formal review of the winter programme. If retained, McCullum would lead the Test side into the 2027 home Ashes series.
White-ball captain Harry Brook, appointed by McCullum, offered unequivocal backing after England’s final-ball defeat in India. “I’ve said plenty of times he’s the best head coach I’ve ever had,” Brook stated. “The way he speaks to everybody, he’s got an aura in the dressing room. Everybody looks up to him … the things he’s done over the four years since he took over has changed English cricket for hopefully the best. One hundred and 25 per cent [he should stay].”
McCullum, who took charge in 2022 and oversaw a swashbuckling revival in both red and white-ball cricket, now plans a brief respite before re-engaging with planners at ECB headquarters. “Right now, after being on the road for a fair bit of time, it’s about getting home, watching some fast horses and playing some shocking golf,” he joked. “A bit of time to reflect, to let things land and objectively look at what is and isn’t working.”
With the review ongoing, no official announcement is imminent, yet all signals point to McCullum remaining the central figure in England’s next chapter.
