Mansfield host Arsenal and Man City travel to Newcastle in FA Cup fifth round

The FA Cup fifth-round draw has served up a pair of blockbuster ties for the competition’s remaining underdogs, with League One Mansfield Town handed a dream home date against Premier League leaders Arsenal and holders Manchester City sent to St James’ Park to face Newcastle United.

Mansfield’s reward for Saturday’s upset of Burnley – a result that carried the Stags into the last 16 for the first time in half a century – is a visit to the One Call Stadium by Mikel Arteta’s table-toppers. The tie guarantees the Nottinghamshire club its biggest gate and most glamorous fixture since the 1970s and keeps alive the possibility of another top-flight scalp.

City, beaten finalists in 2023, must overcome the same Newcastle side they edged in this season’s Carabao Cup semi-final if Pep Guardiola’s men are to remain on course for an eighth FA Cup triumph and erase memories of their shock Wembley defeat to Crystal Palace 12 months ago.

The draw also pitched 2022 winners Liverpool into Molineux to meet Wolverhampton Wanderers, while record eight-time champions Chelsea will travel to north Wales to take on National League story-makers Wrexham, who reached the fifth round for the first time in 29 years by seeing off Ipswich Town.

Brentford, through after Monday night’s victory over giant-killers Macclesfield, will face fellow London Premier League outfit West Ham United at the London Stadium.

Fulham will welcome Southampton, the winner of the rearranged Port Vale-Bristol City tie will entertain Sunderland, and Leeds United renew old rivalries with Norwich City at Elland Road, where Whites boss Daniel Farke will come up against his former club.

All ties are scheduled for the weekend of March 6-9.
