Man City held at West Ham to lose ground on Premier League leaders Arsenal

London – Manchester City’s grip on the Premier League trophy loosened further on Saturday as a 1-1 draw at West Ham United left Pep Guardiola’s side nine points adrift of leaders Arsenal with only a game in hand to cling to.

The champions, reeling from a 3-0 Champions League defeat at Real Madrid four days earlier, began brightly in possession yet created little until Bernardo Silva broke the deadlock in the 31st minute. The Portuguese midfielder appeared to loft a cross toward Erling Haaland, only for the ball to drift over goalkeeper Mads Hermansen and nestle inside the far post.

The advantage lasted barely four minutes. Jarrod Bowen’s inswinging corner found Konstantinos Mavropanos unmarked, and the Greek defender thundered a header past Gianluigi Donnarumma’s late punch to level matters and ignite the London Stadium.

City emerged for the second half with visible urgency. Haaland, mired in a run of four goals in 17 matches, forced a fingertip save from Hermansen and later scuffed wide from Antoine Semenyo’s cut-back. A double substitution on the hour – Rayan Cherki and Jeremy Doku for Semenyo and Ait-Nouri – almost produced instant dividends, yet Hermansen again denied Haaland from Cherki’s slide-rule pass.

West Ham, fighting for survival, rode their luck deep into stoppage time. Marc Guehi sliced a final invitation horribly wide in the fifth added minute, allowing David Moyes’ side to claim a priceless point that lifts them to 17th and out of the relegation zone for the first time since December.

The draw leaves City on 61 points from 30 matches, still second but with the gap to Arsenal now stretching toward double figures. Guardiola, watching from the stands while serving a touchline ban, could only clasp his head as another late chance went begging, the title race slipping ever further from his team’s grasp.
