Luis Díaz admits he didn’t think twice about joining Bayern Munich from Liverpool
Munich – When Luis Díaz picked up the phone last summer and heard the voice on the other end say “FC Bayern,” the Colombian winger did not need a second invitation. “When FC Bayern approached me, I knew from the very first moment that I wanted to make this move,” Díaz told Sky Sport in an interview released this week. “It filled me with pride because I’d known the club for a long time and knew what to expect there. It was a good decision – a decision for an incredible and fantastic team.”
The 27-year-old’s transfer from Liverpool, sealed for a reported €70 million, raised eyebrows in some quarters after he had just helped Jürgen Klopp’s side reclaim the Premier League title under new manager Arne Slot. Signed by Liverpool from FC Porto in January 2022 for €40 million, Díaz had since contributed 41 goals and 23 assists in 148 appearances and collected a Premier League winners’ medal, two EFL Cups, an FA Cup and a Community Shield. Yet the chance to swap Anfield for the Allianz Arena proved irresistible.
“I had no doubt about that,” Díaz said of Bayern’s infrastructure. “The most difficult thing for me and my family was, and still is, certainly the language… but I knew that I would fit in very well here, that I would contribute to the team’s success – just as I had done before in Liverpool.”
Any lingering skepticism has evaporated during a blistering debut campaign in Bavaria. In 32 competitive matches Díaz has already struck 19 goals and laid on 15 assists, forming a telepathic understanding with Harry Kane and Michael Olise at the point of Bayern’s attack. The trio’s pace, creativity and clinical edge have turned Die Roten into early pacesetters and reignited hopes of a deep Champions League run.
“Being happy is the most important thing for a player and his family,” Díaz added. “It was exactly the right decision to come here… So FC Bayern placed their trust in me, and I’m trying to repay that trust on the pitch.”
So far, the Colombian international has done precisely that, and with Bayern’s coaching staff publicly praising his seamless adaptation, the club’s hierarchy are content to sit back and enjoy the show.
