Lugo, Wacha Shine as Royals Split Atlanta Set

Cumberland, Ga. – Seth Lugo’s nine-pitch mix dazzled for 6 1/3 scoreless frames Sunday, lifting the Kansas City Royals to a 4-1 victory over the Atlanta Braves and salvaging the finale of their season-opening three-game set at Truist Park.

The win halted a two-game slide that began with Friday’s 6-0 shutout and peaked with Saturday’s dramatic 9-8 walk-off loss. In that contest, the Royals carried a two-run edge into the bottom of the ninth before closer Carlos Estévez surrendered six runs, the last on a grand slam by Braves designated hitter Dominic Smith.

Despite the early stumble, Kansas City’s rotation offered reason for optimism. Michael Wacha responded to the Opening Day defeat with six scoreless innings on Saturday, striking out seven and walking one before departing at 80 pitches. Lugo followed suit, scattering three hits, fanning three, and issuing no free passes while needing only 77 pitches to secure his first win of 2026.

Through the series, Royals starters compiled a 2.20 ERA, with Wacha and Lugo accounting for 12 combined scoreless innings. Cole Ragans, the club’s Opening Day starter, proved the outlier, tagged for four earned runs on three homers and four walks in four innings of work.

Kansas City now returns home at 1-2, set to open a three-game set against the Minnesota Twins on Monday. Kris Bubic will take the ball for the home opener, followed by Noah Cameron’s season debut and a rematch opportunity for Ragans.

Royals manager Matt Quatraro will hope the early momentum generated by Wacha and Lugo carries into the club’s first homestand, with two rotation spots still awaiting their 2026 debut.
