Liverpool to Face Wrexham at Yankee Stadium During U.S. Pre-Season Tour

Liverpool will return to the United States this summer for a three-match pre-season tour that includes a headline fixture against Wrexham at New York’s Yankee Stadium, sources have told The Athletic. The series, scheduled for the final week of July and the first weekend of August, will also see the Reds face Leeds United and Sunderland in Nashville, New York and Chicago.
The tour is being organized and promoted by TEG Sport, the same company behind last summer’s sell-out Manchester United-Liverpool clash at Williams-Brice Stadium in South Carolina. TEG declined to comment.
Wrexham, currently sixth in the EFL Championship and pushing for a historic promotion to the Premier League, will meet Liverpool on Wednesday, July 29, beneath the famous Bronx lights. The Welsh club, co-owned by actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, have become a stateside phenomenon since the release of the documentary series “Welcome to Wrexham.” Their previous U.S. tours in 2023 and 2024 drew capacity crowds against Chelsea and Manchester United, and local officials estimated the 2023 Chapel Hill friendly injected up to $20 million into the regional economy.
The full slate of fixtures opens Saturday, July 25, when Wrexham face Leeds at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa while Liverpool take on Sunderland at GEODIS Park in Nashville. After the mid-week Yankees-hosted showdown, Leeds meet Sunderland the following night at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey. The series concludes Sunday, August 2, with Liverpool versus Leeds at Chicago’s Soldier Field and Sunderland facing Wrexham at Subaru Park in Philadelphia.
Venues will range from MLS stadiums to NFL-sized arenas, though none will be World Cup sites this summer. Liverpool’s east-coast and midwest itinerary keeps travel manageable for head coach Arne Slot’s squad as they prepare to defend their Premier League title.
For Wrexham, the tour offers another chance to showcase their remarkable rise. More than half of the club’s £26.7 million turnover in 2023-24 came from overseas—primarily North American—sources, and that figure is expected to climb when next season’s accounts are released. A successful run-in could even see Phil Parkinson’s side arrive in the U.S. as a newly promoted Premier League club, adding extra intrigue to the Yankee Stadium date.
Liverpool, owned by Boston-based Fenway Sports Group, boast a massive American fanbase and a portfolio of U.S. commercial partners including Google Pixel, Peloton and UPS. Their 2024 pre-season visit drew more than 190,000 supporters across three cities, and the club is eager to capitalize on the momentum generated by this summer’s World Cup.
Tickets for all matches are expected to go on sale in the coming weeks.
