La Liga or Champions League? Hansi Flick reveals Barcelona’s top priority this season

Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick has underlined that the Champions League, not a domestic double, is the driving ambition for the club this season, even as his side surge toward retaining the La Liga crown.

“Of course LaLiga is the basis, that’s why you’re playing in the Champions League,” Flick told reporters. “The dream for every player, club, fans, coaches is to win Champions League; to play in the Champions League. This is why we are here.”

The German coach highlighted the motivational lift the continental stage provides, claiming his squad competes “5% more than 100% motivated” whenever the famous anthem plays. “In the end the most important thing is to win the Champions League. This is the goal from my side, the players and the club,” he added.

Barcelona’s European path, however, has hit a significant hurdle. They trail city rivals Atletico Madrid 2-0 ahead of the return leg of their quarter-final tie, leaving the tie delicately poised and a comeback imperative if Flick’s men are to keep their continental dream alive.

Before thoughts can turn fully to overturning the deficit, Barcelona must negotiate a derby of their own when they face Espanyol in La Liga. Three points would further cement their position atop the table, yet Flick’s message is clear: every league fixture is merely preparation for the grander prize in Europe.

The Catalans’ midweek home defeat to Atletico has only sharpened focus on the remontada required at the Wanda Metropolitano.
