Joan Garcia: Heroics in Vain as Barcelona Fall 2-1 at Girona

Montilivi, Girona – Monday night’s Catalan derby was supposed to be a statement fixture for FC Barcelona; instead it became a sobering 2-1 defeat that left the visitors stuck in the lower half of the early-season table. Amid the wreckage, 24-year-old goalkeeper Joan Garcia emerged as the lone bright spot, producing a career-best seven saves in a Liga match and earning the official MVP award. Yet the summer signing refused to accept any plaudits, insisting that personal highlights are meaningless without points.
“At the end of the day, that’s what goalkeepers try to do, but unfortunately, today we conceded more than we would have liked,” Garcia told reporters, still in his sweat-soaked kit. “My saves don’t mean much if we don’t get any points.”
Garcia’s sentiment was born of a match in which he twice denied Girona what looked certain goals while the scoreline was still level, first sprawling low to his left to paw away a close-range header and then springing upright to claw a vicious volley over the bar. Those interventions kept Barcelona alive long enough to take a brief lead, yet the hosts struck twice in the closing stages to snatch victory and ignite celebrations across the packed stadium.
The goalkeeper’s frustration was compounded by the manner of the decisive goal. With ten minutes remaining, Girona substitute Claudio Echeverri appeared to stand on defender Jules Kounde’s ankle as the pair contested a loose ball near the edge of the area. Play continued, the cross came in, and the finish flew past Garcia, who could only watch in disbelief.
“I couldn’t see it clearly live, it was such a quick move,” Garcia admitted. “I’ve seen the replay and, in my opinion, it was a foul. Jules got to the ball first. What’s surprising is that VAR wasn’t even called upon so that it could be seen clearly on a screen.”
Beyond the flashpoint, the goalkeeper offered a blunt assessment of Barcelona’s wider defensive frailties, particularly away from home. “We’re conceding too much and too easily,” he said. “We need to analyse it. We have a week off, which will give us time to work on everything we need to work on.”
Garcia, who signed from Espanyol in June, believes the issues begin the moment possession is lost. “From the back, you can see it a little better. We press well when the ball is at a standstill. When we lose the ball, we need to cut off plays a little more and commit fouls in the opposition’s half. They do that to us. They get to us easily, and that wears us down.”
Despite his standout display and growing calls on social media for a Spain call-up ahead of next month’s Finalissima, Garcia waved away any talk of international recognition. “Not right now. I’m focused on getting through this little rough patch we’re going through.”
For Barcelona, the result means back-to-back league defeats and only one win in their last four outings. For Garcia, the numbers on his personal stat sheet are worthless until the team’s tally under the points column begins to improve.
