Inter Milan plan short-term contract offer for former Manchester United attacker

Milan, Italy – Inter Milan are weighing up a one-year contract extension for Henrikh Mkhitaryan, according to Corriere dello Sport, as the 37-year-old’s current deal enters its final weeks.
The Armenia international, who joined the Nerazzurri on a free transfer from Roma in 2022, has become a mainstay in Simone Inzaghi’s midfield despite the club’s broader shift toward younger, long-term assets under Oaktree Capital’s ownership.
Sources close to the club indicate that Inter’s hierarchy view Mkhitaryan as a possible exception to their youth-first policy, citing his professionalism, conditioning and dressing-room influence. Any renewal would be struck on reduced wages and would keep the veteran at San Siro through the 2025-26 campaign.
Mkhitaryan, originally signed by Manchester United in 2016 after a prolific spell at Borussia Dortmund, previously revealed that a breakdown in relations with then-manager José Mourinho hastened his Old Trafford exit. He was eventually used as a makeweight in the swap that brought Alexis Sánchez to Manchester in January 2018.
Since leaving England, the attacker has rebuilt his reputation in Serie A, first with Roma and now with Inter, where he has collected domestic silverware and featured heavily in European competition. Retirement remains a live option should no agreement be reached, but Inter’s provisional offer could extend his stay in Italy to a fifth consecutive season.
Inter directors are expected to make a final decision once the current term concludes, balancing squad depth against a stated strategy of lowering the age profile across the roster.
