Huge blow! Harshit Rana ruled out of IPL 2026; KKR yet to decide replacement

Kolkata Knight Riders have suffered a major setback ahead of IPL 2026, with star all-rounder Harshit Rana officially ruled out of the tournament. The 24-year-old, who injured his knee during a warm-up fixture against South Africa in Navi Mumbai ahead of last year’s T20 World Cup, underwent surgery on 9 February and will not recover in time for the new season.

Rana’s absence leaves a sizeable hole in the KKR attack. The right-armer was instrumental in the franchise’s 2024 title run, claiming 19 wickets, and followed that with 15 wickets in 13 games during the 2025 campaign. Retained for Rs 4 crore ahead of the 2025 auction, he had cemented his place as a regular across formats for India.

With Rana unavailable, KKR are yet to name a direct replacement. Franchise sources indicate that the opportunity will fall to the existing Indian quicks—Akash Deep, Vaibhav Arora, Umran Malik and Kartik Tyagi—to fill the void. “Harshit Rana unfortunately will not be available but it gives the opportunity to other bowlers in the squad—Vaibhav, Umran, Kartik and Akash—to step up and grab the opportunity. No replacement has been decided yet,” a source tracking developments told TimesofIndia.com.

Uncertainty also surrounds the participation of Sri Lanka tearaway Matheesha Pathirana, who picked up an injury during the T20 World Cup and remains in rehabilitation. Meanwhile, KKR moved on Friday to bolster their pace stocks by signing Zimbabwe fast bowler Blessing Muzarabani. Standing 6 ft 8 in, Muzarabani has taken more than 90 wickets in 80-plus T20 Internationals at an average of around 21, with best figures of 3 for 8. He is scheduled to arrive in Kolkata on 17 March to join the squad ahead of the 2026 season.
