Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick has clarified why teenage winger Lamine Yamal will begin Sunday’s La Liga meeting with Sevilla from the bench, stressing both squad rotation and the player’s recent illness as key factors.
Speaking to DAZN shortly before kick-off at Camp Nou, Flick confirmed Yamal had returned to training after missing sessions earlier in the week through illness, but felt the 17-year-old would benefit from a short breather during a congested pre-international-break schedule.
“These three games before the break are very important. We are looking for victories, we must start with today,” Flick said. “He needs to have a break and Roony can play and do well. He’s ready to step in if we need him.”
The German coach underlined his confidence in the depth of his squad by handing a start to Roony Bardghji, while Pedri, Marc Bernal, Dani Olmo, Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha all retain their places in a strong-looking XI.
Flick, who has called up 23 players for the fixture, also praised the backing of the home support, recalling the electric atmosphere during last weekend’s win over Atlético Madrid.
“I’m really looking forward to playing this match for the fans; 62,000 spectators, that’s incredible. The atmosphere was fantastic against Atlético. I hope it’ll be the same today. It’s so important to have the supporters with us.”
Although Yamal will watch the opening stages from the touchline, Flick left the door open for a second-half cameo should circumstances demand, keeping Barcelona’s brightest emerging talent fresh for the pivotal run of fixtures that precede the international break.
