With that trio anchoring the centre, there is no structural reason Cherki cannot start on the right, drift infield, and allow O’Reilly to push forward. Add Erling Haaland’s penalty-box presence plus one of Jeremy Doku or Omar Marmoush on the opposite flank and City retain both defensive security and attacking variety.

City are not the finished article; Guardiola admits as much.
