Gareth Bale reveals why he rejected Manchester United for Real Madrid in 2013
Gareth Bale has disclosed that Manchester United tabled a higher transfer fee than Real Madrid when both clubs pursued him in the summer of 2013, yet the Welshman insists his heart was already set on the Spanish giants.
Speaking on The Overlap podcast, Bale recalled the final days of his Tottenham career, when a stunning individual season had made him one of Europe’s most coveted players. United, then managed by David Moyes, attempted to hijack the move by submitting a superior financial package and proposing to include a player in the deal. Bale confirmed he held talks with Moyes, but said the discussions never progressed far.
“I did talk to United [in 2013]. They actually bid more than Real Madrid. I spoke with David Moyes. But my heart was set on Madrid anyway,” Bale explained. “And I had something in place with Daniel Levy, more of a gentleman’s agreement.”
Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy, renowned for driving hard bargains, was reluctant to sell to a domestic rival and risk strengthening a Premier League competitor. Although Levy complicated negotiations, Bale stressed that the chairman ultimately honoured the informal understanding that the winger would be allowed to move abroad. That stance cleared the path for Real Madrid to secure what was then a world-record transfer.
Bale, who had been promised the number 11 shirt by Madrid officials, believes the choice to spurn United’s more lucrative offer was vindicated by the decade of success that followed. “I think I chose the right one [based on the] last 12 years,” he said. “They offered more money to buy me, and a player [too], but it didn’t really get any legs to be honest.”
Since swapping north London for the Spanish capital, Bale became a talismanic figure in Real Madrid’s golden era, collecting multiple Champions League winners’ medals and scoring decisive goals in several finals. Reflecting on the crossroads of 2013, the Welshman is convinced that prioritising sporting ambition over wages steered him toward the most decorated chapter of his career.
