Munich — Bayern Munich moved decisively to secure one of the pillars of its back line on Friday, announcing that France international Dayot Upamecano has signed a contract extension that will keep him at the club through June 2030.
The agreement ends months of speculation linking the 27-year-old centre-back with heavyweight suitors such as Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain, who had been monitoring his situation as his previous deal entered its final months.
Upamecano, who joined Bayern from Bundesliga rivals RB Leipzig in 2021 after the Bavarians triggered a €43 million release clause, has developed into what club officials describe as a “top international player” during his 180 competitive appearances for the record champions.
“Upamecano is another central figure in our team who we’ve been able to extend with,” Bayern board member for sport Max Eberl said via the club’s official website. “A squad needs anchor points, and we’ve got the next with Dayot. The question often isn’t who you sign but who you develop. Dayot has matured into a top international player here at Bayern.”
The new deal represents a significant victory for Bayern’s hierarchy, who had grown increasingly vocal about the need for clarity over the defender’s future. Club powerbroker Uli Hoeneß recently voiced his frustration, suggesting that “his advisors are going to do everything they can to lure him away.”
By committing his long-term future to the Allianz Arena outfit, Upamecano ensures continuity in a defensive unit that has relied heavily on his pace, physicality and composure. Since arriving from Leipzig—where he initially moved from sister club Red Bull Salzburg in 2017—the Frenchman has also amassed 35 senior caps for Les Bleus.
With the extension finalized, Bayern can now turn their full attention toward the remainder of the campaign, fortified by the knowledge that a key defensive lynchpin will remain in place for at least the next four and a half seasons.
