Former United star Juan Mata gives his verdict on Michael Carrick

Juan Mata has entered the growing debate over Manchester United’s next permanent manager by throwing his support behind interim boss Michael Carrick. Speaking to talkSPORT, the 37-year-old former Spain international argued that Carrick’s understated intelligence and proven dressing-room influence make him a credible candidate for the Old Trafford role on a full-time basis.

“Michael is very capable,” Mata told the station. “He’s a very intelligent guy. First of all, as a person, I love him.”

Mata, who played alongside Carrick at United, emphasised that the ex-midfielder’s value extended well beyond tactical acumen. Recalling their time together, Mata described Carrick as “a fantastic team-mate, always there for you,” noting that he “never wanted to take the spotlight but he let his football talk.” According to Mata, this low-key demeanour fostered trust throughout the squad without relying on overt charisma.

The Melbourne Victory attacker also highlighted Carrick’s on-field contributions, stressing how the playmaker’s eye for a pass benefited those operating between the lines. “He was very important for the team always, looking for these passes, especially for players like me,” Mata said, suggesting that Carrick’s presence allowed teammates to express themselves and knit the side together.

Translating those attributes to coaching, Mata believes Carrick’s professionalism and character set a daily example. “In the dressing room, he was always an example for all of us: his character and his professionalism,” Mata insisted, hinting that such leadership is precisely what United require amid renewed pressure for results.

Concluding his assessment, Mata expressed optimism about the club’s current direction under Carrick’s temporary guidance: “He knows how to get to the players, of course, and I’m enjoying watching the games at the moment.”

United supporters buoyed by the team’s recent upturn in form will welcome the endorsement, although the final call rests with INEOS as they weigh whether to convert Carrick’s interim impact into a long-term appointment.
