Ex-England women's youth player Carr dies aged 35
Amy Carr, the former England youth goalkeeper who twice confronted a brain tumour, has died at the age of 35, the Football Association has confirmed.
Carr, who represented England at Under-17 and Under-19 level, first learned she had a brain tumour in 2015 while playing professionally for Norwegian side IL Sandviken. After treatment she returned to England, coaching in Milton Keynes and, in November 2024, completed the Dublin Marathon to raise more than £2,000 for brain-tumour research. Later that year doctors discovered a second tumour.
In a statement posted on the Lionesses' official X account, the national team said: "We are heartbroken to hear that former England youth player Amy Carr has passed away aged 35. Amy, who was diagnosed with a second brain tumour in 2024, devoted her time to raising money for vital brain tumour research that could help others. She remains an inspiration to all."
Born in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, Carr began her club career with Arsenal before moving to Chelsea and later Reading. Her performances earned her a football scholarship in the United States, and she subsequently joined IL Sandviken in Norway's top flight.
Chelsea also paid tribute on social media: "We are saddened to learn of the passing of former Chelsea goalkeeper, Amy Carr. Our condolences are with Amy's friends and family at this time."
