BALTIMORE – A familiar face is returning to the familiar surroundings of the Delmarva League. On Thursday, the Triple-A Baltimore Orioles officially recalled outfielder Colin Selby from their Las Vegas Aviators affiliate, welcoming the Chesapeake, Virginia native back to familiar territory to finish the season with the Norfolk Tides.
Acquired via trade last July along with infielder Ramon Urias in exchange for All-Star pitcher Zach Eflin, Selby spent time on the Orioles' active roster and their injured list before a late-season demotion to the Tides. The 25-year-old outfielder, whose roots trace back to George Wythe High School and later Huguenot High School in Chesapeake, showed flashes of his potential throughout last year, displaying power and a solid contact approach. Being recalled suggests the Orioles see enough in him to bring him up for a stretch, possibly adding another bat and right-handed arm to their minor league contingent in Norfolk.
Now back where he first rocketed onto the big league radar some years ago, Selby’s assignment is expected to be the Norfolk Tides. The Tides, under manager Pedro Munoz, have struggled offensively this season, and Selby could provide needed outfield depth and competition for starting positions. For Selby, playing in front of the hometown crowd at K. Rick Davis Stadium in Chesapeake represents a welcome homecoming. His recall comments reflected his readiness and excitement to contribute:
"It's definitely a positive move, a signal of confidence," Selby stated upon learning of the recall. "I'm eager to get back to Norfolk and help the Tides compete. Being local, it makes it extra special to wear the uniform again in front of our community support."
Selby's minor league assignment comes as another Chesapeake native in the spotlight announces his collegiate decision. Wide receiver/defensive back Malik Porter of Huguenot High School in Richmond, Virginia, officially declared his commitment to Hampton University for the 2024 season.
The 6-foot-3, 190-pound Porter will now have the opportunity to develop his skills in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), renowned for its competitive level. Several Division I offers were on the table for the versatile, athletic prospect who possesses strong hands and the ability to play both receiver and coverage corner. Hampton's financial aid package and the proximity of the program to his Richmond hometown likely played significant roles in his decision-making process, providing a well-rounded college experience alongside athletic development. His announcement was made official Thursday, signaling the conclusion of a recruiting race.
Both Selby and Porter represent notable talent flowing through Eastern Virginia sports channels, finishing their respective high school careers with Huguenot and George Wythe and now impacting their chosen paths at the next level. The continued development of local athletes speaks volumes about the talent pool in the region, keeping Delmarva Sports and Virginia High School Sports conversations active. For now, Selby focuses on his professional journey in Norfolk, while Porter prepares to embark on his collegiate career.
