Chelsea knock on Kim Min-jae’s door as Bayern value defender at £34.5m

Chelsea have made an exploratory move for Bayern Munich centre-back Kim Min-jae, signalling their intent to reinforce the heart of defence ahead of the next transfer window.
According to Bild journalist Christian Falk, the London club have “knocked” on the door of the 29-year-old South Korean international, who has started 12 Bundesliga matches and six Champions League fixtures this season but is currently second-choice behind Dayot Upamecano and Jonathan Tah.
The Blues, who allowed striker Nicolas Jackson to join Bayern on loan last summer, maintain a productive relationship with the German champions and could revive it with a fresh deal for the former Napoli stopper. Bayern are not actively shopping Kim, yet sources indicate they would entertain negotiations if an offer in the €30m-€40m (£26m-£34.5m) bracket materialises.
Chelsea’s interest comes despite a crowded roster that already lists Levi Colwill, Wesley Fofana, Trevoh Chalobah, Tosin Adarabioyo, Benoit Badiashile, Josh Acheampong, Jorrel Jorrel Hato and Axel Disasi. Colwill’s long-term injury and doubts over Disasi’s future have prompted the club to weigh an experienced addition, and Kim’s pedigree as a title-winner in Italy and Germany places him high on the shortlist.
Inter Milan and AC Milan are also monitoring developments, though Falk stresses that Kim is content with his squad role at the Allianz Arena and has not requested a departure. With no formal bid tabled, the situation remains fluid, but Chelsea’s approach confirms their determination to secure a proven central defender before the market reopens.
Kim, contracted to Bayern until 2028, is valued by the club hierarchy for his reliability and leadership qualities. Whether Chelsea return with a concrete offer—and whether Bayern soften their stance—will dictate if the defender’s future lies in the Premier League.
