Chelsea have entered a crowded chase for Athletic Bilbao’s 23-year-old flyer Nico Williams, according to journalist Graeme Bailey, and will have to out-muscle Arsenal, Barcelona, Liverpool and Manchester United if they hope to secure the Spaniard’s signature next summer.

Williams has started 26 matches for Athletic this season, returning four goals and six assists across all competitions, form that has cemented his reputation as one of La Liga’s most dangerous wide men. Predominantly deployed on the left, the winger is comfortable switching to the right and is noted for his close control, direct dribbling and ability to whip in inviting deliveries.

Although his contract at San Mamés runs until 2035, Chelsea are preparing a compelling offer to tempt Bilbao into a sale. Head coach Liam Rosenior is looking to inject greater pace and end-product into his attack, and club scouts believe Williams’ long-range shooting and creativity from wide areas fit the brief.
