Benjamin Sesko reveals the secret to recent trend of late United goals
London – Benjamin Sesko has lifted the lid on the mentality that has allowed Manchester United to keep salvaging results deep into stoppage time, after the Slovenian striker’s 94th-minute finish secured a 1-1 draw at West Ham United on Tuesday night.
The goal, United’s third in dying moments across recent fixtures, preserved fourth place in the Premier League and maintained Michael Carrick’s unbeaten start since taking charge. Speaking exclusively to TNT Sports beneath the London Stadium lights, Sesko said the comeback culture is being fuelled by collective resilience rather than luck.
“I’m happy with my finish, but yeah, not so happy with the draw, because I know we deserve the win because we were fighting till the end,” the 22-year-old explained. “Unfortunately, these days come when you’re a bit unlucky. Maybe the intensity was not exactly what it should be. But yeah, we were fighting. In the end, we got a draw, which is really important.”
United, fielding summer recruits Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, struggled to penetrate West Ham’s compact block and looked vulnerable on the counter-attack. Sesko admitted the squad is still adjusting to the demands of twice-weekly football but stressed that unity has become their most potent weapon.
“We are working together no matter what is happening. If we are behind, if we are in front, it does not matter as we are always fighting,” he said. “When difficult moments are coming, we’re facing it together, which is really important and can lead to the results like right now.”
The former RB Leipzig forward believes small margins will decide whether the team can turn spirited draws into victories after the forthcoming international break. “We have to breathe for each other,” he added. “We have to take care in every single situation, every second of the game, to be focused, to be on point, and obviously when the chances are coming to finish them.”
For the travelling faithful, Sesko’s latest intervention evoked memories of Sir Alex Ferguson’s famed “Fergie time” era. The striker, however, insists the late drama is no coincidence: it is the product of daily graft and an unshakeable refusal to accept defeat.
United return to domestic action in two weeks with the knowledge that another last-gasp strike could be the difference between a top-four finish and Europa League football. If Sesko’s assessment is correct, the comeback trail is only just beginning.
