NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Arkansas arrived at Bridgestone Arena on Sunday night determined to make a statement, and the Razorbacks left with the SEC tournament trophy and a warning for the rest of the country: Beware the Hogs.
Behind freshman phenom Darius Acuff Jr., Arkansas toppled Vanderbilt 86-75 to claim the program’s second SEC tournament crown and deliver coach John Calipari his 16th career conference-tournament title. Acuff, fresh off SEC Player of the Year honors, poured in 91 points and dished 23 assists across three games in Nashville, earning tournament MVP and stamping himself as perhaps the most explosive guard still standing in March.
“Make sure we stay together, make sure we stay a brotherhood, we’ll be fine,” Acuff said after cutting down the nets. The Detroit native’s poise belies his age, and his supporting cast is rapidly maturing. Fellow freshman Meleek Thomas scored 44 points in three games, including 29 in Saturday’s overtime semifinal win over Ole Miss. Sophomore wing Billy Richmond III added 18 in the final, while senior forwards Trevon Brazile (44 points, 29 rebounds for the week) and Malique Ewin (25 and 20) punished Vanderbilt inside and out. Brazile’s back-to-back triples late Sunday finally broke the Commodores’ resistance.
Calipari, who won six SEC tournaments at Kentucky, became the first coach to capture the event with two different programs. He downplayed its significance beforehand—"Not a big tournament guy,” he reiterated—yet the Razorbacks responded with a championship-level edge. “Hell no,” Brazile said when asked if the team shared Calipari’s shrug. Message received: Arkansas improved to 26-8 and now eyes a deep NCAA Tournament run.
Vanderbilt’s dynamic backcourt of Tyler Tanner and Duke Miles kept the Commodores within striking distance—Tanner finished the week with 54 points and 13 assists, Miles 64 and 21—but Arkansas’ offensive firepower proved too much. The Razorbacks entered the week ranked among the nation’s top-six offenses; when Brazile is burying late-game threes, that attack becomes downright terrifying.
Concerns remain—Arkansas’ defense sits outside the top-50 nationally—but elite guard play covers a multitude of sins in March. Calipari, ever the showman, already has his next sales pitch ready: “I’ll tell all the boys who are listening: You pass on this one, you’ll regret it,” he said, eyeing NBA decision-makers and, perhaps, future opponents.
The Hogs leave Nashville with hardware and confidence. The rest of the bracket has been put on notice.
