Arbeloa: Thiago Will Keep Getting First-Team Chances

Madrid—Real Madrid head coach Álvaro Arbeloa left no doubt about Thiago Pitarch’s future on Monday, declaring that the Castilla standout “will continue to enjoy opportunities with the first team” after a Champions League debut that turned heads across Europe.
Speaking ahead of his side’s Liga clash with Getafe, Arbeloa praised the 20-year-old’s temperament as much as his talent.
“He’s a very fast lad, and you can see what he’s capable of,” the coach said. “He’s an extremely dynamic player, with great stamina, work rate, and mobility. His greatest quality is his tremendous personality; he always wants the ball, and when he’s under pressure, he doesn’t feel pressured.”
The decision to throw Thiago straight into a knockout-phase fixture was, Arbeloa insisted, a calculated show of faith.
“I understand that people are surprised he’s making his debut in a Champions League knockout match, but he’s doing it because I had complete confidence in him to do what he often does. The academy players have an easier time understanding what I expect from them.”
Arbeloa added that the winger’s fearlessness on the grandest stage exemplifies the pathway he wants to maintain between La Fábrica and the Bernabéu first team.
“It’s a pleasure to have a player like him,” he said. “Thiago will continue to enjoy opportunities with the first team.”
The coach also previewed the upcoming Getafe fixture, acknowledging the tactical nous of José Bordalás and expecting “a very close match” against a side that “defends very well” and concedes “the fewest shots on the road.”
On squad rotation, Arbeloa stressed that changes are proactive, not punitive.
“When you make changes, it’s not because someone is doing badly, but because you want something different,” he explained, adding that “there’s room for everyone” in a system that prizes versatility.
Injury updates were limited to a cautious wait-and-see approach.
“We are very clear about what is wrong with him and what we want now, which is for him to recover from these discomforts and return to 100 percent when he is fully recovered,” Arbeloa said, refusing to set a timeline.
The press conference ended with a broader reflection on player commitment.
“I don’t understand footballers who hold back,” Arbeloa said. “There’s no better way to prepare than to perform well for your team.”
With Thiago’s emergence adding fresh impetus to Madrid’s season, Arbeloa’s message was unequivocal: the club’s next generation is not here to watch; it is here to play.
