A Forgotten Gundam Prequel Makes a Surprise Comeback Release With Master Grade Gunpla Model Kit
Bandai is dusting off one of the Universal Century’s most overlooked chapters, re-issuing the MG 1/100 Gundam F90 alongside two expansion weapon packs that let builders turn the understated prototype into a snow-skiing scout or a heavily armored fortress. First launched in 2019, the kit is rooted in Mobile Suit Gundam F90, the manga prequel to the theatrical feature Mobile Suit Gundam F91, and returns with the same extensive joint engineering, Beam Rifle, Beam Sabers, shield and water-slide decals that made the original release a sleeper hit among Master Grade collectors.
Joining the base kit are two Mission Packs designed by legendary mecha draftsman Kunio Okawara. The F-Type & M-Type set retails for roughly US$17 and re-configures the F90 into a close-combat bruiser: the F-Type bolts on additional armor plates, while the M-Type swaps in an orange jetpack, arrow shooter, missile launchers and extra firearms. A second expansion, the C-Type & T-Type set at about US$18, pushes the mobile suit into specialized environments. C-Type equipment drapes the frame in a fabric mantle and clicks skis onto the feet, turning Beam Sabers into ski poles for arctic maneuvers. The T-Type, by contrast, stacks bigger shields and a high-output booster on the backpack, creating the kit’s most defensive profile.
Pre-orders are live now, with the US$32 base model and both expansion sets scheduled to ship in June 2026.
